Main Street Area Press Release
7/18/10

From Main Street Arena:

PRESS RELEASE:

Officials of the new Main Street Arena today announced plans to revitalize the former Charlottesville Ice Park by transforming it into a dynamic, multi-use sports and event venue that will include winter sports, summer sports, day camps and a variety of special events throughout the year.

The Main Street Arena team is headed by W. Mark Brown, a University of Virginia graduate and Charlottesville-based real estate investor and deal maker. Brown and his team purchased the facility from former owners Roberta and Bruce Williamson for $3 million. "The Williamsons deserve a lot of thanks from the community for keeping the park open for the previous seven years," Brown said. His vision when the Main Street Arena opens on September 15, is to feature ice for six months of the year and a turf field surface for the other six months, providing the flexibility to host a wide variety of recreational offerings as well as special events.

"You will be able to do just about any type of sports or event in a 25,000 s quare-foot building located on the mall. You can have a concert, a trade show or a convention. You can play soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, kickball, ice hockey or figure skating. You can have a major fashion show in there, an art show…anything that needs a large climate-controlled space. "

The Main Street Center's recreational offerings will include its Winter Sports Programs, including the Ice Park's traditional programs of hockey, figure skating, skating lessons and public skating. The Winter Sports Programs will run from October through March.

The Summer Sports Programs, scheduled to run from April through September, will include soccer and lacrosse leagues and camps, among other activities.

Main Street Arena officials plan on aggressively pursuing a wide range of special events throughout the year, including weddings, trade shows, concerts, corporate meetings, charitable fundraisers and more. The facility is in the process of creating infrastructure which will allow it to adapt to a variety of designs and configurations at any point during the year to accommodate specific event needs.

"We have high hopes for Main Street Arena as an event/convention space and have already been in touch with a number of potential corporate and community partners who have expressed a lot of interest in it. I think we meet a very unique need for event organizers. If you think about it, this kind of space just doesn't exist anywhere else in this town beyond the John Paul Jones Arena, which is obviously quite expensive to rent. We are confident that this has the potential of delivering a significant business impact to the area."

The deal, Brown said, came together extremely quickly, and could not have happened without the support of a number of key players.

"I'd like to first thank the Williamsons, who generously served the community for so long with the Ice Park. I'd also like to thank my longtime lending partners who have helped me through the years, who include Scott Steele of Cornerstone Bank, Marshall Pryor of Old Dominion Bank and Bryan Thomas of BB&T."

The project also owes much to its investors many of whom are local people who wanted to save the Ice Park, highlighted by John and Donna Ligush. "The first investor is always the hardest to secure and John and Donna were the first to make the commitment. Their support was key to attracting others as we moved forward, and without them this wouldn't be happening."

Brown also cited the support he has received from the City of Charlottesville as being crucial to the project moving forward. "We hope this project will be an engine of economic and social activity downtown. The mall has had a difficult few years and we hope this will draw people and businesses back downtown. The officials I have met with from the city have been incredibly supportive and I look forward to working closely with them as we move forward."

Cavaliers Build for the Future
5/05/10

The UVa Ice Hockey Team announced the election of two new officers on Tuesday May 4th. Ben Moser of Bryn Mawr, Pa was elected Vice President and Rob Borden of Bentleyville OH was elected Secretary. They join President Andrew Lehrman and Treasurer Jon Hass for the 2010-2011 season.

Head Coach Tony Fischer also announced Joe Uzcategui was named Captain for the upcoming season. Uzcategui of Rye NY, a 4th year student next year, will lead the Hoos on and off the ice next year. Fischer says "Joe will bring his natural ability to lead to the team. I think he is a great choice; the team looks up to him and I look forward to working with him as captain of our squad."

Larissa Hawkes, a student at the Darden Graduate School of Business has also been appointed GM of the Cavaliers. She will take over for Chris Branin who is graduating this year. Larissa is a former womens hockey player for the Hoos and will work on marketing, business relations and team travel for the Cavaliers.

Congratulations to all!

The team also voiced concern over the closing of the Ice Park and still hopes that a deal can be made to save the rink. In the mean time, the team has reached out to rinks in Richmond Va to secure ice slots for next year. Fischer is confident the ice will be available in Richmond next year. "I spoke to several rinks in Richmond and I feel good about open ice slots for our team," Fischer said. The team now has to decide if it wants to play a full schedule next year or maybe try a different approach. With added drive time each week, the team is considering playing a limited schedule until a permanent home can be found. The team hopes to have a decision by the end of May on their immediate future.

As a result of the Ice Park closing, the team has stopped scheduling games for next semester. Fischer says, "The schedule is 90% done, but we do not want to schedule a game we can not make." After the team decides on its course for next year, Fischer will work out the rest of the schedule and notify other teams of UVa's decision. The team may have to cancel some games or move games to Richmond in order to play.

Any questions or comments can be made to uvahockey@gmail.com.

Scheduling for 2010-2011 season
4/23/10

The UVa hockey team is currently scheduling games for next year.

With the recent news of our home ice closing in June we are looking to secure ice at a different rink to play and practice at.

We hope and support the ice rink at its current location can be saved, but we are also looking at different options that best support our team.

Any scheduling request can be made to Tony Fischer at tonya2mi@aol.com.

Charlottesville Ice Park
3/13/10

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Men's Club Ice Hockey Team at the University of Virginia wishes to release the following summary of its position regarding the announcement of the Charlottesville Ice Park as available for purchase.

First, we would like to acknowledge the current ownership and management of the Ice Park for their support of Club Ice Hockey at the University of Virginia over the years. It is because of our strong relationship that ice hockey continues to thrive in Charlottesville and at the university.

Next, we support the continued operation of an ice hockey rink in the current space on the downtown mall and will do our part in contributing to the success of a new generation of ownership. It is extremely rare for a club ice hockey team to have such immediate access to a professionally maintained ice surface and this is critical for our recruiting and hockey operations, as well as ticket sales and sponsorships. The closing or redevelopment of the Charlottesville Ice Park may disrupt our team's activities in the short term.

"The Charlottesville Ice Park provides a unique opportunity to integrate the entire community. Children, students, and long-time residents can each find entertainment and recreation at this pillar of the downtown mall," said head coach Tony Fischer. "We hope a courageous group of owners will come along and do the right thing."

Media are encouraged to contact Chris Branin, braninc10@darden.virginia.edu, for further information.

The Men's Club Ice Hockey Team at the University of Virginia is a non-scholarship club team at the University of Virginia. The Team competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference Hockey League under the governance of the American Collegiate Hockey Association and is not supported by nor affiliated with the University of Virginia Athletics Department.

End of Season
2/21/10

The University of Virginia Men's Club Hockey team ended its season with a 3-1 loss to the Duke Blue Devils in a game played at the ACCHL Tournament held in Washington DC.

The Cavs played with heart and determination in their final game of the year. The only goal scored for the Cavs was by Rob Borden, who skated the length of the ice and fired a wicked slap shot past the Duke goaltender. Goalie Eric Brandan and center Andrew Lehrman also had a strong game for the Hoos.

The team wishes the best of luck to Doug Godfrin, Andrew Sufka, Greg Faust, Ben Abel, Andrew King, Kevin Miller, Eric Freid, Caleb Dunn and Manager Chris Branin who all graduate this year.

A special thanks to Lesley H., who served as this web master. She developed and updated our web site this year and for that the team thanks her.

The team would also like to thank all the players, coaches, off ice officials, medical staff, the Charlottesville Ice Park and alumni for their support this year.

We look forward to next season, and (as always) we are looking for talented players, coaches and staff who want to make the 2010-2011 season a successful one.

Anyone interested in being a part of next years team should contact Head Coach Tony Fischer at uvahockey@gmail.com.

Updates for next year's tryouts and meetings will be posted during the offseason. Please check back for updates.

Questions, comments, including those about making a donation to the team, can be directed to uvahockey@gmail.com.

End of First Semester
11/29/09

*****Important Notice***** The GU game is at Laurel Md at 3:50 pm, NOT Kettler as previously listed.

The University of Virginia Men's club hockey team finishes up its 2009-2010 1st semester on the road with games against D1 Maryland Terrapins on Friday and Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday. Click on schedule for more information on game times and rink locations.

The team is coming into the last weekend with a 2-10 record. Last year the team went without a win until the 2nd semester. "It's been a tough semester so far" UVA's head coach Tony Fischer said this week. "Although our record does not show it, we are on the cusp of turning this season around" Fischer said. "A break here or a break there would have turned the season around, we are so close, we just need to get over the hump" he continued. "the guys play hard every game and sooner or later that hard work will pay off." Guys like Kevin Miller, Ben Probert, Andrew Lehrman and goalie Eric Brandam will turn the season around if they continue their hard work.

"We have 2 important games coming up and if we can have a good showing in these two games, it will go along way next semester" he added.

Fischer also went on to mention that the team is always looking for good hockey players on grounds. "A lot of former high schools players on Grounds don't even know UVa has a hockey team". He gets asked all the time the University has a hockey team?" when he is out around Charlottesville wearing his UVA hockey apparel.

If you are interested in playing for the Wahoo's for the 2nd semester contact coach Tony Fischer at uvahockey@gmail.com

Hoo's Play in Front of Huge Crowd
11/22/09

UVA faced off against rival VT on Friday Nov. 20th in front of 5,000 plus hockey fans at the Roanoke Civic Center.

The Hoo's played hard and never gave up in a 7-2 loss to the Hookies. VT came up strong and build a 3-0 lead early in the 1st period. The Cavaliers worked hard to come back despite a apparent goal by Kevin Miller was not called half way through the first intermission. The puck seemed to hit the back of the net but neither the Referee or the goal judge called it a goal. Although the fans in that side of the arena said the puck went in.

Not put back by the lack of quality officiating the Cavaliers scored their only goal when Ben Probert made a nifty pass to Andrew Lehrman who made no mistake about it and put the puck high on the right side and beat the VT goalie. The referee had no choice on this one and awarded the Hoo's a goal.

The rest of the game saw the Hoo's chasing the strong VT team and seemed to be the victim of some questionable calls by the home town referees.

"Its too bad that in a atmosphere like this, with over 5, 000 fans , the quality of officiating is what it was tonight" UVA coach Tony Fischer said after the game. " I had both VT fans and UVa fans come up to me after the game and say they were sorry about how the game was called." he continued. " I was surprised at how many VT fans said the 1st goal went in and how they we embarrassed at the 'home cooking' they saw tonight by the Referee", Fischer continued. Fischer was ejected after the 2nd period by the Referee.

The Hoo's take the week off for the Thanksgiving Holiday and then travel to take on Maryland and Georgetown the following week.

Miller Nets Hat Trick
11/15/09

Senior assistant captain Kevin Miller netted a hat trick as UVa fell to North Carolina State University on Friday night.

Miller played a strong game and was determined to put the puck in the net. His determination resulted in the 1st hat trick of the year for the Wahoos.

Adding 2 helpers were winger Doug Godfrin. Andrew Lehrman added an assist on one of Miller's goals as well. The game opened up with a moment of silence and a check presentation for NCSU player Stephen Russell who died over the summer. The Cavaliers donated to the Stephen Russell Foundation "because we are a hockey family," coach Tony Fischer said.

Although the Hoo's played well at times, they could not keep State off the score board. "It was not a 12-3 game," assistant coach Risto Kerovouri said after the games. "It seemed to be a closer game than the score shows," he added.

The Hoos travel to VT next Friday to face the Hookies at the Roanoke Civic Center at 7:30 pm on Friday.

Stephen Russell Memorial
11/09/09

IMPORTANT TIME CHANGE - game beings at 8:30pm

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Men's Ice Hockey Team at the University of Virginia announced today that it will make a donation to the Stephen Russell Memorial. This donation will be recognized with a check presentation and moment of silence during a pre-game ceremony before their game against North Carolina State University on Friday, November 13, 2009, at the Charlottesville Ice Park on the Downtown Mall. The ceremony will begin at 8:30pm (IMPORTANT TIME CHANGE).

The Stephen Russell Memorial was created in July 2009 to honor the passing of North Carolina State University student-athlete Stephen Russell, a goaltender on the NCSU Men's Ice Hockey Team. The Memorial aims to carry forward his "positive approach to life and hockey" during the annual Canes Cup, recently renamed the Stephen Russell Memorial Tournament.

"Our players were really the impetus behind making this contribution to Stephen's Memorial. It shows how close the collegiate hockey community is and how much these players care about one another," said Virginia head coach Tony Fischer. "Our hearts are with the entire NCSU Men's Ice Hockey Team during what must be a very difficult season."

Anyone who wants to participate in UVa's presentation or is interested in donating to the foundation through UVA can contact coach Tony Fischer at uvahockey@gmail.com by Thursday Nov. 12, 2009

Thanks Joe!
10/31/09

The Cavaliers beat the Duke Blue Devils 3-2 in a wild and wooly game that ended in a sudden death shootout on Saturday night.

The Blue Devils led 1-0 after the 1st period. In the second period, 1st year defenseman Rob Borden went end to end and scored on his own rebound to make the score 1-1 at the end of 2 periods.

In the 3rd period, Duke score in the first 2 minutes to make the score 2-1. The Cav’s found themselves in a familiar place, trailing in the 3rd period, but this time they responded.

Both teams had numerous chances during the period, and as he has done all season, goalie Eric Bradnam made several spectacular saves to keep the score 2-1.

Half way through the 3rd period the Hoo’s tied the game on a power play goal from Ben Moser. With a face off deep in Duke’s end, center Andrew Lehrman won the draw back to freshman Ben Moser who made no mistake about it and fired a slap shot from the point that found its way to the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.

The rest of the period saw both teams skate end to end and come close to scoring the deciding goal, but neither team could win it in regulation time.

In overtime, off the opening faceoff, the Hoo’s Doug Godfrin broke in on a 2-2 with center Kevin Miller and barley missed the net that would have sealed the win for Virginia. Both teams continued to pound the puck at the other teams net but could not score a goal in OT.

The teams then went into a shootout. With the tension mounting both goalies stopped the 1st 5 players to keep the score 2-2 heading into sudden death shootout. The next two players for both teams did not score. Duke then scored a goal in the top of the 7th round to force Virginia to score or go home. Enter winger Joe Utzcategui, with pressure on him to score or lose the game, Joe skates down the ice with every Hoo fan in the building on their feet watching Utzcategui put the puck in the back of the net. Forced with the pressure of sudden death Utzcategui comes through with a game saving goal. Goalie Eric Bradnam then stops the Blue Devils in the next 2 rounds.

In the bottom of the 10th round, out skates Joe Makhoul. Makhoul out for the past 2 weeks with a wrist injury is tapped by coach Tony Fischer to try and win the game for the Cavaliers. Makhoul skates down the ice and puts the puck behind the Blue Devils goalie and into the net. The team and crowd erupt as Makhoul skates up the side boards to meet his team in a celebration that concludes a long, hard fought game.

The game was well played by both teams and was, by all accounts, a nail bitter from the start to the end. It was very entertaining game and ended on a high note for the Cavaliers with their first win in ACCHL play this year.

The team takes on rivals Virginia Tech on Friday at the Ice Park and hope to draw a big crowd to help support the team as the take on league leading Hookies.

ACCHL Play
10/25/09

The hockey team lost both its games this weekend in ACCHL play.

They dropped 7-4 against UNC and 4-0 against Georgetown. The team played well at times but could not hold off the opponents in its own end. They were out shot each game and goalie Eric Brandnam came up with some good saves in the Georgetown game to keep the score close.

Andrew Sufka and James Eysenbach were given the games pucks for their effort this weekend.

Head coach Tony Fischer "sees times when we play very good and other times when we just give the puck away". "We need to do a better job in the individual battles and holding on to the puck, we give it away likes a hot potato".

The Hoos hope to rebound from this weekend when they host Duke University at 9:40 pm on Friday at the Charlottesville Ice Park.

Hoos fall short against CUA
10/19/09

The Cavalier hockey team lost 5-2 to the Catholic University of America on Saturday night. The Cavs scored first on a shot by defenseman Ben Moser (1st of his career) with an assist from Rob Borden in the first period.

The Hoo's could not hold the lead for long and found them selves down 5-1 in the 3rd period when Caleb Dunn netted a shot from the point to make it 5-2.

Joe Utzcategui was given the game puck for his effort in the game.

The team opens up it's ACCHL play this weekend when they host UNC on Friday and Georgetown on Saturday at the Ice Park.

Hoo's Struggle Against a Strong Maryland Team
10/11/09

The Cavaliers lost to Maryland 11-0 in a game dominated by Maryland. The Hoos seemed to be off pace and could not keep up with the faster Terps.

Although the team gave up 11 goals, goalie Eric Brandam made several good saves to keep the goals at 11. Brandam was given the game puck for his performance.

The Cavaliers host Catholic University of America on Saturday night at 9:40.

UVa will host Maryland
10/09/09

The Men's Ice Hockey team will host the Maryland Terrapins on Sat Oct 10, at 9:40 at the Charlottesville Ice Park. The Cavs are coming off two losses in the Commonwealth Cup last weekend and hope to rebound against a strong D1 Maryland Team.

Andrew Krill and Caleb Dunn earned the game pucks last weekend and join Doug Godfrin and Eric Brandam as recipients of a game puck for the most effective player during a game. Coach Tony Fischer gives out one game puck per game to the player he feels helped the team the most during the game.

Congratulations to Krill, Dunn, Godfrin and Brandam.

Penalties Hurt the Hoos
9/28/09

A combination of good play by JMU and penalties by UVa cost the Cavaliers the game.

Once again JMU came out strong building a 3-0 lead in the 1st 13 minutes of the game. By the 2nd period the Hoos saw themselves down by 5-0.

Ben Probert scored the 1st Virginia goal at the 14:31 mark of the 2nd period. JMU followed up with 2 more of their own before Andrew King netted a goal in the 3rd period making the score 7-2.

Kevin Miller scored the last Virginia goal in the 3rd period matching a goal from JMU.

Goalie Eric Bradnam must be commended on his fine performance, JMU could have easily scored 12 goals, but Bradnam closed the door on several close range shots and a few breakaways. Ben Moser had a strong game on defensive with several end to end rushes, as did rookie Doug Godfrin who had several scoring oppurtunities but could not get the puck behind the JMU goalie.

The Cavalier team did not play their best game, and hope to put this one behind them as they prepare for the Commonwealth Cup this weekend in Richmond.

Hoos Win in Overtime!
9/26/09

The Men's Hockey team opened its season with an exciting overtime win against JMU Friday night.

The Cavaliers came back from two 2 goal deficit to win the game. Scoring for the Cavaliers were Kevin Miller, Joe Uzccategui,(2) Ben Probert and Doug Godfrin(2). Godfrin put the puck in the net at the 3:27 minute mark of overtime from a nifty pass from Ben Probert to win the game.

Also playing well for the Hoos were 1st year goalie Eric Bradnam who stopped 19 of 24 shots, including a 2nd period break away, and rookie defensemen Rob Borden and Ben Moser.

JMU really took it to the Cavaliers early in the 1st period building a 2-0 lead until Uzcatagui netted a rebound off a Andrew Lehrman shot to make it 2-1. Then the Hoos scored two more goals by Probert and Godfrin to take a 3-2 lead. Credit JMU , as they stormed back to take a 5-3 lead half way into the 3rd period.

After coach Tony Fischer called a time out to slow JMU's momentum, the Cavaliers came back with goals by Godfrin and Utcatagui to tie the game at 5 at the 17:46 mark of the 3rd period.

In OT, Uva had numerous chances around the net but could not finish, until Probert streaked down the right wing, taking his defensive man with him and made a nifty saucer pass to a wide open Gofrin who put the puck in the back of the net.

Both teams played extremely well and should be proud of the way they handled the game.

The team hopes to continue its success as it meet JMU tonight at the Charlottesville Ice park for a 9:40 start.

Fischer says, "We still have a lot of work to do, getting the chemistry right on each line is very important to our success. Each player must strive to do their best each and every shift, and we do not have that right now, but we will get there."
