UVA Hockey Welcomes Coach Hickson and Jackson to the Program!
Head Coach Andrew Hickson
Coach Hickson brings years of ACHA hockey experience to UVA as a four-year power-forward for Northeastern University’s ACHA D-II squad from 2009-2013. As a native of Ottawa, Ontario, hockey is in his blood and in his upbringing, and he learned to skate as a toddler on the capital city’s numerous outdoor rinks.
At Merivale High School in Ottawa, Coach Hickson also excelled at soccer, rugby, football, and volleyball (in addition to ice hockey) and he was named “Top Athlete” of his graduating class. As a 6’3”, 190-lbs freshman athlete, Coach Hickson was offered a scholarship to row crew at Northeastern but politely declined, as the demands of a mechanical engineering degree and a life-long commitment to hockey took precedence.
Coach Hickson is passionate about being a part of UVA hockey and helping to bring hockey back to Charlottesville, and he still plays recreational hockey in Richmond. He lives in Charlottesville with his wife Ame and 8-month old son Cassius and works remotely as the Director of Sales and Marketing at an electronics and displays manufacturing company.
Assistant Coach Nate Jackson
Coach Jackson returns to coaching hockey after a 9-year hiatus. He coached Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. from 2008-2014 ending with a 103-34-7 record. Gonzaga won three Mid-Atlantic Prep Hockey League championships (2010, 2013, 2014) under Coach Jackson and he was named Washington Post All-Metropolitan Coach of the Year in 2014 after going 26-0-1 in his final season.
He played NCAA Division-I college hockey at Yale University from 2002-2006 and played a year of professional hockey in Gap, France for Les Rapaces de Gap of the Ligue Magnus (2006-2007). Coach Jackson grew up playing hockey in the Washington, D.C. area and played for the Washington Little Capitals organization until going to Phillips Exeter Academy his junior year. He was named co-captain and earned First Team All-New England status his senior year.
Coach Jackson is excited to join the UVA program and help strengthen hockey in the Richmond-Charlottesville region. He works for The Collegiate School and lives in Richmond with his 5-year old son.
